At West Highlands Auto Repair, we inspect suspension components to help drivers understand what is worn, what is urgent, and what can be monitored over time.

Your vehicle’s suspension system does more than make the ride feel smooth. It helps keep your tires planted to the road, supports safe steering, improves braking control, and protects other parts of the vehicle from excess wear. When suspension components wear out, the signs start out small and inconsequential, but ignoring them for too long can lead to uneven tire wear, poor handling, longer stopping distances, and even more expensive repairs down the road.

What Parts Make Up Your Suspension?

Your suspension system is made up of several components that work together to absorb bumps, support the vehicle’s weight, and keep the wheels properly aligned. Common suspension parts include shocks, struts, control arms, ball joints, tie rods, sway bar links, bushings, coil springs, wheel bearings, and alignment-related components. It’s important to note that different manufacturers (I.e. Toyota, Subaru, Jeep, KIA) have different approaches when it comes to suspension setup & components. Even varying between their own lineup of vehicles.

These parts each play a different role. Some parts affect comfort, while others directly affect steering and safety. That is why not every suspension concern has the same level of urgency.

           Common Suspension Fail Points

One of the most common suspension issue is worn

           shocks

            or

           struts

. These parts help control bouncing and keep your tires firmly connected to the road. When they wear out, the vehicle may feel bouncy, unstable, or rough over bumps. You may also notice the front end dipping when braking or the vehicle swaying more than usual when turning.

           Ball joints

            and

           control arm bushings

are also common wear points. Since they’re protected by a rubber seal that weathers and cracks, it often leads to the metal joint part to wear down faster with outside elements entering the joint. Ball joints allow suspension and steering parts to pivot & move smoothly, while bushings cushion metal components and reduce vibration. When these parts wear out, you may hear clunking, popping, or knocking noises, especially over bumps or when turning. Note: Control arm wear and tear most commonly happens through the ball joints & bushings, but the arm itself can be damaged from large road debris or impact. Here’s an example of what I did to my own control arm once…

           Tie rods

(I called them Tire rods for about 10 years) are another important part of the steering and suspension system. A worn tie rod can cause loose steering, uneven tire wear, or a drifting feeling while driving. Since tie rods help control wheel direction, they should not be ignored if they are loose or failing. #1 It’s not safe because controlling the car becomes unpredictable, but #2 and probably what most people will unfortunately listen to, is it can quite literally eat your tires. Tires are not cheap, so make sure to get your alignment & tires checked regularly.

           Sway bar links

            or

           Stabilizer bar links

            and

           bushings

commonly wear out as well. These parts help reduce body roll when turning. When they fail, they often cause rattling or clunking noises, especially at lower speeds or over uneven roads.

           Wheel bearings

can also be mistaken for suspension problems. A failing wheel bearing may cause a humming, grinding, or growling noise that changes with vehicle speed. If left alone too long, it can become a serious safety concern and extremely expensive if your vehicle manufacturer chose to build the wheel bearing into the hub assembly (easily over $500, easily).

. If you ask me a general question like "how long do I have with *Insert issue*", my immediate answer will most likely be 'it depends'. The answer

           depends

           on which part is worn

, how badly it is worn, and how the vehicle is being driven. Some suspension issues can be monitored for a short period, while others should be repaired as soon as possible.

If shocks or struts are worn

           but not leaking badly

or causing major handling problems, you may be able to drive for a while. However, the longer you wait, the more likely you are to experience uneven tire wear, poor ride control, and reduced braking stability. So it depends, but it may not always be pressing like some of the other things on this list.

If sway bar links are worn or noisy

, the vehicle may still be drivable for some time, but handling can feel less stable, especially around turns. This type of repair is often less urgent than a loose ball joint or tie rod, but it should still be addressed before it causes additional wear or safety concerns. If you’re a good driver, then maybe stability is not a major concern. But I also drive in Denver, so no, you are not a good driver.

If a ball joint, tie rod, or control arm

            has

           significant play

, the repair becomes much more urgent. These parts affect steering control and wheel stability. Driving too long with a severely worn steering or suspension component can lead to unsafe handling, RAPID tire wear, or in extreme cases, component separation- I’ve seen it before, luckily no one was injured besides the wallet of the customer who ended up having to buy new rotors, calipers, backing plate, wheel hub, along with the control arms (the bill was not pretty).

If a wheel bearing is making noise

            , it should be inspected

           ASAP

. Some bearings can make noise for a while before failure, but they can worsen quickly. A badly worn wheel bearing can affect wheel movement, braking, and overall safety. It can also heat up from metal on metal contact and burn up the axle, which is not cheap (it happened to me- was it my fault for not practicing what I preach? Yes, yes it was my fault. Did it cost me $500 extra dollars because I drive a sports sedan, yes, yes it did).

How Suspension Problems Affect Your Vehicle

Worn suspension parts can affect your vehicle in several ways. One of the most common issues is

           uneven tire wear

. If suspension components are loose or the alignment is off, your tires may wear on the inside or outside edges much faster than normal. This can shorten the life of your tires and make the vehicle less predictable on the road. More importantly, it will wear your tires unevenly and if you drive an AWD vehicle, then you will need to buy four tires. If you don’t buy all four, then you could need transfer case & differential work down the line.

Suspension problems can also

           affect braking

. If shocks or struts are worn, the vehicle may

not stay as stable during hard braking.

The front end may dip more than normal, and the tires may not maintain ideal contact with the road. But you already knew that when I mentioned it earlier.

Steering can also become less precise. You may notice the vehicle wandering, pulling, clunking, or feeling loose. Over time, this can make the vehicle less comfortable and

           less safe to drive.

Ignoring suspension repairs can also

Regular tire rotations are also important because they help tires wear evenly and make suspension-related issues easier to spot early.

can also extend the life of your suspension and tires. If your vehicle pulls, the steering wheel is off-center, or your tires are wearing unevenly, an alignment inspection is a good idea.

           Routine inspections

are one of the most helpful ways to catch suspension problems early. Many suspension parts wear gradually, and drivers often get used to the changes over time. A professional inspection can identify loose, leaking, cracked, or worn components before they become bigger problems. We do routine general inspections for every oil change, so if you bring your vehicle into our shop, you’ll always know what’s going on with your vehicle. No guess work or being blindly hopeful in your ‘reliable’ Toyota or Honda. Note: a vehicle is as reliable as your ability to take care of routine maintenance.

It is also important to

           pay attention to new noises.

Clunks, rattles, squeaks, popping sounds, or grinding noises should not be ignored, especially if they happen while turning, braking, or driving over bumps.

When Should You Schedule a Suspension Inspection?

You should have your suspension inspected if your vehicle feels bouncy, pulls to one side, makes clunking noises, has uneven tire wear, feels loose while steering, dips when braking, or rides rougher than normal. Even small changes can be signs that something is starting to wear.

A suspension inspection can help separate what is urgent from what can be monitored. Not every noise means the vehicle is unsafe, but it is always better to know what is happening before the issue becomes more expensive.

The short answer to vehicle longevity (and not always cost effectiveness) is- do all the preventative maintenance according to the manufacturers maintenance schedule, more importantly, everything beyond 30,000-40,000 miles (with the exception of Oil Changes & Tire Rotations, do those every 5,000 miles for synthetic and 3,000 miles for Semi-synthetic- tire rotations every other oil change). If this is something you’d rather leave to the professionals to worry about, and you’re in the Highlands, Sloans Lake, and Denver Area, then West Highlands Auto Repair is here to serve all your maintenance, oil change, diagnostic and vehicle repair needs. We’re your personal mechanic, a mechanic near you!

P.S. this is a general guide, do consult a professional if you’re unsure- or more so, if you have a specific question, goal, problem, and/or concern. :)

With that out of the way, here’s the long answer, and it all starts with a fundamental shift in your mindset when it pertains to your vehicle. A really simple way to understand preventative maintenance is to think about your car the way you think about your health. Most people don’t (shouldn’t) wait until they collapse to start caring for their body. They do small, routine things to avoid bigger problems later. Your vehicle works the same way. Consistent maintenance, done at the right time, and for the right reasons, will decrease the chances of bigger problems arising and can greatly extend the long term life of your vehicle. But a lot of people hear “Maintenance Schedule” or “Manufacturer Recommends” and immediately think: “Why would I replace or service something if it isn’t broken?” or “why would I ever listen to the manufacturer?”… which is Real & valid/both are completely honest and justifiable reactions. Let’s break down some of those ideas though, starting with what a manufacturer’s maintenance schedule actually means, what can be included in it, and how preventative maintenance packages can make your life easier (and make your vehicle last longer).

So, the manufacturer’s scheduled maintenance, what does it mean? Every vehicle has a factory maintenance schedule, it’s usually listed in the owner’s manual and sometimes inside the infotainment system. —Note: If you own a Honda or Acura, the full maintenance breakdown is listed below our second Brain Break— At West Highlands Auto Repair, we provide the intervals and costs for every vehicle that’s in our shop. The schedule is typically organized by mileage and/or time- for example: Every 5,000 miles (or 5 to 12 months), Every 30,000 miles, Every 60,000 miles, and Every 100,000 miles. This schedule is the manufacturer’s roadmap for keeping the vehicle operating as designed. Once the vehicle leaves the factory, the manufacturer does not directly decide what is serviced on your vehicle because it’s now yours. But there are things that over time will need to be replaced or serviced, not because they are poorly manufactured (highly debatable), but because over time things age and break down. Oil begins to lose its lubrication properties, rubber seals and bushings begin to weather and tear, your car just gets old essentially.

There is a caveat for these particular intervals for your vehicle (yes, your vehicle, the vehicle of you who’s reading this), your vehicle is going to have its own specific intervals for inspections & replacement of parts- the 30,000 mile service, 60,000 mile service, and 100,000 mile service are more generally a rule of thumb, but most manufacturers have maintenance items at or near these service intervals.

The intervals include things like: Oil and filter changes, Tire rotations, Cabin and engine air filters, Brake fluid service, coolant services, transmission fluid service intervals, Spark plugs, Belt inspections and replacements, Safety and suspension checks, and much much more. At West Highlands Auto Repair, we simplify it for you in our Courtesy inspection report that is done for every vehicle that enters our shop. When you have the full picture of your vehicle, we’re able to better serve you and provide you with the best service moving forward. What this means for you is, a personal maintenance plan is not just a checklist- it’s a long term car care strategy, one that can reduce the chances of a major vehicle repair. Your car isn’t a singular system, It’s a chain of systems that rely on each other- systems that quite literally need to be firing on all cylinders. The maintenance plan is built around what typically wears out, degrades, or loses effectiveness over time- even when there are no obvious symptoms yet.

A Couple Common Questions asked about Scheduled and Preventative Maintenance:

“What’s the point of doing scheduled maintenance if nothing is worn out or broken?”

Because many parts and fluids don’t fail politely. They don’t always give you a warning light or a loud noise before they cause damage. The reality is, a lot of maintenance items are about preventing damage, not fixing symptoms. A specific example can include Fluids that degrade from heat, moisture, and contamination over time. They can be At level, or, look ‘okay’, but may no longer offer the protection for internal components like they should. Another example, rubber parts, they age over time (belts, hoses, oil seals) and can crack long before they snap or leak out fluid. Filters clog gradually and reduce airflow or engine efficiency long before they “do irreversible and unspeakable damage to the engine” (only slightly exaggerated, slightly). Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time- this lowers boiling point and can lead to internal corrosion or loss of brake pressure. For all these things, if you wait until something is obviously broken, you’re often paying for: the failed item, whatever damage it caused when it failed, and any other associated costs. Scheduled maintenance is basically choosing predictable, controlled costs instead of surprise repairs.

"Is there a difference between scheduled maintenance and preventative maintenance?"

Yes, but there’s overlap, and at West Highlands Auto Repair we work with you to determine the differences that align with your goals or expectations. They’re not identical. Scheduled Maintenance is the baseline: what the manufacturer recommends at certain time/mileage intervals to keep the car operating normally. It’s standardized and designed for “average” or even “dusty” driving conditions. Preventative Maintenance is more personalized. It’s maintenance based on: your driving habits (short trips vs. highway commuting) local climate (hot summers, cold winters, elevation) your goals (keep it 3 years vs. keep it 12 years) your vehicle’s real condition (what we see during inspections).

Preventative maintenance might include things not emphasized in the factory schedule, or it may recommend earlier service intervals based on how your vehicle is actually being used. Think of it like this: Scheduled maintenance is the manufacturer’s “standard plan.” Preventative maintenance is your “long-term ownership plan.”

As a kid I would write song lyrics on my arm to help me express how deeply I felt them, not just the words but the Feeling of it. I don’t know who will read this far, or read this blog post, but I’d like to share a line in this song I’ve had on repeat recently.

For me, this resonates with the idea of hoping against hope- meaning, even when you have nothing to hope for, you can still hope for the chance of hope. I’d love to dissect more, but that’s out of scope for this blog

Why Maintenance Packages Make Long-Term Car Care Easier.

Most people don’t try to ignore maintenance- they’re just busy, and it’s a drag to do additional work for a car that already costs a lot in gas and insurance. It’s understandable for all those reasons, but also because car care can feel random: “What did I do last time?” “Am I due for anything?” “Is this urgent or can it wait?” “How do I plan for larger services?” That’s exactly what a maintenance package is designed to solve. A good maintenance package helps you,

Stay ahead of wear items before they become breakdowns.

Catch problems early with consistent inspections.

Prioritize what matters now vs. later to which spreads out costs.

Build a complete service history (helpful for resale value and peace of mind). But most importantly, it keeps your vehicle reliable (to the best of your manufacturers ability ) in your day to day life.

What Long-Term Maintenance Actually Looks.

Like Long-term car care isn’t about “doing everything all the time.” It’s about having a rhythm of routine services like:

Oil & filter changes (Frequent), Tire rotations, Fluid top-offs, Basic safety & Inspection checks.

Condition-based services (as needed), like Brakes (a consistent reliable tab on measurement specifically), Suspension repairs when wear or age show up, Battery replacement when testing shows it’s weakening, etc. (I say etc. for the condition-based stuff because it can be vehicle specific, but most cars have at minimum brakes, suspension, and a battery).

Interval services (less frequent, big payoff), things like Transmission fluid service, Coolant service, Brake fluid service, Spark plugs, Belt replacements, Differential/transfer case services (if applicable)

#3 is where long-term ownership is won or lost. The Big Idea to keep in mind: Clarity Beats Guesswork. You get clarity from inspections done at West Highlands Auto Repair in Wheat Ridge, then you know what’s going on with your car and what to expect. We send you service reminders and check-ins to keep you up to date. And every time the car is in our shop we’re inspecting it and continuing the long term service history of the vehicle, that way there’s a full picture when you sell it or choose to do future repairs. A maintenance plan should never feel like pressure, it should feel like clarity. When you understand what the schedule is, why it exists, what’s truly preventative vs. optional, and how it applies to your driving, then you make better decisions, spend money more efficiently, and get a vehicle that lasts longer with fewer “surprise” repairs.

Want a Long-Term Maintenance Plan Built Around Your Car? Is your goal to keep your vehicle reliable for years, well a smart maintenance package is one of the best investments you can make. It creates a path forward that’s easy to follow and tailored to how you actually drive.

Regular oil and filter changes are required to keep “the blood” of your engine in top lubricating condition. With today’s oil change intervals becoming further apart, it is critical that the oil and filter be changed on time to make sure that it can handle all the stresses placed on it when you drive. Especially driving around in the Wheat Ridge, Highlands, and Sloans Lake area.

What engine oil does is lubricate your engine, protecting the abrasive metal on metal contact of the internal components. It also keeps the engine interior clean, picking up dirt and debris entering from the environment through the Air Box, or internal wearing of components. It keeps moisture from corroding internal parts, and cycles heat away from critical areas in the engine.

Although, today’s modern cars and oil do much more than that- they can determine how your vehicle is fueled, significantly affecting fuel economy, or even determining raw performance and power through systems like VVT. Without oil, there is no engine (unless you’re an old Honda or Toyota, they were indestructible), so it’s vital to ensure you’re changing your oil within your specified intervals to increase the life-time longevity of your vehicle. If you have a Honda and you’re slightly past due, you may be lucky and be fine, if you’re a Jeep in the same situation and it’s a common occurrence, more times than not you may need a motor. All to say, make sure you’re getting those regular oil changes on time.

The reality is, over time the oil’s ability to do its job decreases, resulting in increased engine wear, sludge build up, and other nasty things. So it’s necessary to always keep up with routine maintenance to prevent your oil from doing this.

Another item to consider is that though engines are designed not to, some oil can be used and burned internally, even in a perfectly running engine. With oil change intervals being around 5,000 miles, this burning of oil can lead to a decreased amount circulating through the engine making it harder to function properly. Worst case scenario, the oil can get so low that your engine will starve for oil causing permanent internal damage. So if you’re not a fan of buying a new motor every year, we highly suggest at least two oil changes a year instead. Even if the vehicle is not driven more than 5,000 miles in a year, it’s still important to get the oil changed at bare minimum once a year.
