What is going on with my car and who is preventative maintenance???

Breaking Down the Idea of Preventative Maintenance.

If you’re hoping to keep your car for the long haul, let’s say 5, 10, or even 15+ years (or if you just enjoy peace of mind), your best friend is going to be a simple maintenance plan / simple maintenance guide.

The short answer to vehicle longevity (and not always cost effectiveness) is- do all the preventative maintenance according to the manufacturers maintenance schedule, more importantly, everything beyond 30,000-40,000 miles (with the exception of Oil Changes & Tire Rotations, do those every 5,000 miles for synthetic and 3,000 miles for Semi-synthetic- tire rotations every other oil change). If this is something you’d rather leave to the professionals to worry about, and you’re in the Highlands, Sloans Lake, and Denver Area, then West Highlands Auto Repair is here to serve all your maintenance, oil change, diagnostic and vehicle repair needs. We’re your personal mechanic, a mechanic near you!

P.S. this is a general guide, do consult a professional if you’re unsure- or more so, if you have a specific question, goal, problem, and/or concern. :)

With that out of the way, here’s the long answer, and it all starts with a fundamental shift in your mindset when it pertains to your vehicle. A really simple way to understand preventative maintenance is to think about your car the way you think about your health. Most people don’t (shouldn’t) wait until they collapse to start caring for their body. They do small, routine things to avoid bigger problems later. Your vehicle works the same way. Consistent maintenance, done at the right time, and for the right reasons, will decrease the chances of bigger problems arising and can greatly extend the long term life of your vehicle. But a lot of people hear “Maintenance Schedule” or “Manufacturer Recommends” and immediately think: “Why would I replace or service something if it isn’t broken?” or “why would I ever listen to the manufacturer?”…  which is Real & valid/both are completely honest and justifiable reactions. Let’s break down some of those ideas though, starting with what a manufacturer’s maintenance schedule actually means, what can be included in it, and how preventative maintenance packages can make your life easier (and make your vehicle last longer).

Brain Break:

What’s heavy forward but is not backward?

A ton

Great, now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

What's the Meaning of the Manufacturer's Scheduled Maintenance?

So, the manufacturer’s scheduled maintenance, what does it mean? Every vehicle has a factory maintenance schedule, it’s usually listed in the owner’s manual and sometimes inside the infotainment system. —Note: If you own a Honda or Acura, the full maintenance breakdown is listed below our second Brain Break— At West Highlands Auto Repair, we provide the intervals and costs for every vehicle that’s in our shop. The schedule is typically organized by mileage and/or time- for example: Every 5,000 miles (or 5 to 12 months), Every 30,000 miles, Every 60,000 miles, and Every 100,000 miles. This schedule is the manufacturer’s roadmap for keeping the vehicle operating as designed. Once the vehicle leaves the factory, the manufacturer does not directly decide what is serviced on your vehicle because it’s now yours. But there are things that over time will need to be replaced or serviced, not because they are poorly manufactured (highly debatable), but because over time things age and break down. Oil begins to lose its lubrication properties, rubber seals and bushings begin to weather and tear, your car just gets old essentially.

To learn more about your vehicle's 30,000 mile service click here. To learn more about your vehicle's 60,000 mile service click here. And to learn more about your vehicle's 90,000-100,000 mile service click here.

P.S. If there isn’t much information/details for those intervals right now, I’m sorry- I’m getting to it!

There is a caveat for these particular intervals for your vehicle (yes, your vehicle, the vehicle of you who’s reading this), your vehicle is going to have its own specific intervals for inspections & replacement of parts- the 30,000 mile service, 60,000 mile service, and 100,000 mile service are more generally a rule of thumb, but most manufacturers have maintenance items at or near these service intervals.

The intervals include things like: Oil and filter changes, Tire rotations, Cabin and engine air filters, Brake fluid service, coolant services, transmission fluid service intervals, Spark plugs, Belt inspections and replacements, Safety and suspension checks, and much much more. At West Highlands Auto Repair, we simplify it for you in our Courtesy inspection report that is done for every vehicle that enters our shop. When you have the full picture of your vehicle, we’re able to better serve you and provide you with the best service moving forward. What this means for you is, a personal maintenance plan is not just a checklist- it’s a long term car care strategy, one that can reduce the chances of a major vehicle repair. Your car isn’t a singular system, It’s a chain of systems that rely on each other- systems that quite literally need to be firing on all cylinders. The maintenance plan is built around what typically wears out, degrades, or loses effectiveness over time- even when there are no obvious symptoms yet.

A Couple Common Questions asked about Scheduled and Preventative Maintenance:

“What’s the point of doing scheduled maintenance if nothing is worn out or broken?”

Because many parts and fluids don’t fail politely. They don’t always give you a warning light or a loud noise before they cause damage. The reality is, a lot of maintenance items are about preventing damage, not fixing symptoms. A specific example can include Fluids that degrade from heat, moisture, and contamination over time. They can be At level, or, look ‘okay’, but may no longer offer the protection for internal components like they should. Another example, rubber parts, they age over time (belts, hoses, oil seals) and can crack long before they snap or leak out fluid. Filters clog gradually and reduce airflow or engine efficiency long before they “do irreversible and unspeakable damage to the engine” (only slightly exaggerated, slightly). Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time- this lowers boiling point and can lead to internal corrosion or loss of brake pressure. For all these things, if you wait until something is obviously broken, you’re often paying for: the failed item, whatever damage it caused when it failed, and any other associated costs. Scheduled maintenance is basically choosing predictable, controlled costs instead of surprise repairs.

"Is there a difference between scheduled maintenance and preventative maintenance?"

Yes, but there’s overlap, and at West Highlands Auto Repair we work with you to determine the differences that align with your goals or expectations. They’re not identical. Scheduled Maintenance is the baseline: what the manufacturer recommends at certain time/mileage intervals to keep the car operating normally. It’s standardized and designed for “average” or even “dusty” driving conditions. Preventative Maintenance is more personalized. It’s maintenance based on: your driving habits (short trips vs. highway commuting) local climate (hot summers, cold winters, elevation) your goals (keep it 3 years vs. keep it 12 years) your vehicle’s real condition (what we see during inspections).

Preventative maintenance might include things not emphasized in the factory schedule, or it may recommend earlier service intervals based on how your vehicle is actually being used. Think of it like this: Scheduled maintenance is the manufacturer’s “standard plan.” Preventative maintenance is your “long-term ownership plan.”

Brain Break: Story time

As a kid I would write song lyrics on my arm to help me express how deeply I felt them, not just the words but the Feeling of it. I don’t know who will read this far, or read this blog post, but I’d like to share a line in this song I’ve had on repeat recently.

“We all choose to find hope

Because hope is choosing to find meaning

In a meaningless world”.

For me, this resonates with the idea of hoping against hope- meaning, even when you have nothing to hope for, you can still hope for the chance of hope. I’d love to dissect more, but that’s out of scope for this blog 😛

Honda Maintenance Service Intervals: References
A and B are oil & filter change services.

Service #1 is rotate the tyres.

#2 is replace the engine and cabin air filters. Both filters look good.

#3 is service the transmission fluid.

#4 is replace the spark plugs.

#5 is service the coolant.

#6 is service the rear differential fluid.

#7 is service the brake fluid.

Why Maintenance Packages Make Long-Term Car Care Easier.

Most people don’t try to ignore maintenance- they’re just busy, and it’s a drag to do additional work for a car that already costs a lot in gas and insurance. It’s understandable for all those reasons, but also because car care can feel random: “What did I do last time?” “Am I due for anything?” “Is this urgent or can it wait?” “How do I plan for larger services?” That’s exactly what a maintenance package is designed to solve. A good maintenance package helps you,

  1. Stay ahead of wear items before they become breakdowns.
  2. Catch problems early with consistent inspections.
  3. Prioritize what matters now vs. later to which spreads out costs.
  4. Build a complete service history (helpful for resale value and peace of mind). But most importantly, it keeps your vehicle reliable (to the best of your manufacturers ability 👀) in your day to day life.

What Long-Term Maintenance Actually Looks.

Like Long-term car care isn’t about “doing everything all the time.” It’s about having a rhythm of routine services like:

  1. Oil & filter changes (Frequent), Tire rotations, Fluid top-offs, Basic safety & Inspection checks.
  2. Condition-based services (as needed), like Brakes (a consistent reliable tab on measurement specifically), Suspension repairs when wear or age show up, Battery replacement when testing shows it’s weakening, etc. (I say etc. for the condition-based stuff because it can be vehicle specific, but most cars have at minimum brakes, suspension, and a battery).
  3.  Interval services (less frequent, big payoff), things like Transmission fluid service, Coolant service, Brake fluid service, Spark plugs, Belt replacements, Differential/transfer case services (if applicable)

#3 is where long-term ownership is won or lost. The Big Idea to keep in mind: Clarity Beats Guesswork. You get clarity from inspections done at West Highlands Auto Repair in Wheat Ridge, then you know what’s going on with your car and what to expect. We send you service reminders and check-ins to keep you up to date. And every time the car is in our shop we’re inspecting it and continuing the long term service history of the vehicle, that way there’s a full picture when you sell it or choose to do future repairs. A maintenance plan should never feel like pressure, it should feel like clarity. When you understand what the schedule is, why it exists, what’s truly preventative vs. optional, and how it applies to your driving, then you make better decisions, spend money more efficiently, and get a vehicle that lasts longer with fewer “surprise” repairs.
